What a delight! The tales in this CD are truly a pleasure to listen to, whether you are adult or child. I have played them over and over again in my car while traveling for lighthearted fun listening. They are entertaining and, yet, with a twist of African American history that we often overlook. Children will enjoy the hilarious antics of Br’er Rabbit and Br’er Gator along with Br’er Coon and the frogs. Sparky and Rhonda have mastered the art of storytelling so that we know who’s speaking without ever seeing the characters. The pictures they create in our minds eye are far better than anything on screen. “Big Sixteen”, “Long John”, and “Elder Rucker and the Ghosts” will capture the imagination of older children and teens. These are the stories that should end up in the literature books for high schoolers. They are an excellent beginning for African American genre studies. For all their sociological importance, these stories and songs are just great listening! Phyllis Rogers
